The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Evaluating and retaining effective teachers is a hot topic since Mick Zais, Supt. of Education, is proposing a major change in ways of determining teacher pay. He would like to see it based on student academic performance, with a higher pay level for the most "effective" teachers and more dismissal of "ineffective" teachers. The topic is widely discussed nationally, with a major controversy over how best to determine which teachers are most effective. The state-wide committee prepared 10 questions for each local League to discuss and see if they can reach consensus.
